    Re: Pants' 88 GT-S HELP!

-i hate to say it but the only place ive seen that is pull-a-part. so unsure on cause.

-my guess would be the h.g. is blown to an oil galley? and not the cooling system. this could cause combustion chamber pressures into the head/pcv/intake system. bent valve or some other head damage seems likley aswell, but would be noisey.

-i would start thinking about pulling the head. pull the covers and let us know what you find.

-hopefully the bottom end is o.k., if so it could be a good chance to upgrade your cams/head if you have the $.

It is a bit noisy on shutdown, just for a second. A quick rattle and its done, but it could be anything.

Tomorrow is my last day of classes, so after that I'll be free to tear it down as much as needed. Expect pictures of under the valve covers and all that tomorrow.

In good news though, I took advantage of a rainy afternoon and pulled the stereo out of the old car and got it all the way ready for sale.

I think there's an issue with the PCV valve blowing oil into the intake mani :sad

Oil should never be allowed to get that black :cuss
You sure that's oil and not fuel?

The dieseling could be a result of a leaking injector, all plugs were the same? fuel consumption OK?

Plugs look oil fouled, worn rings would explain the oil blowby and dieseling but it should be smoking
    contstantly.

Whats the compression? Should be 160psi+ on all

Run the motor and pull off the breather pipe - does it smoke?
Get a mate to drive it hard and ride behind, you'll soon see whether it's smoking or not, often the driver can't see his own smoke.

    Re: Pants' 88 GT-S HELP!

I have no idea why the oil was that black, considering the fluids were changed on saturday. It could be a mix of oil and fuel, it had both smells when I pulled it open.

All the plugs looked exactly the same, (got new ones today by the way to see what happens). I didnt have anything but the FE to gauge fuel consumption to, but it doesnt seem too bad.

It certainly smokes constantly when the throttle is open. At idle there is nothing but once driving the smokescreen comes out. Pulling away from a stop engulfs the entire car behind in smoke.

I'll do a compression test tomorrow before I pull it open.

Just a thought, would a catch can stop the problem? I know it wouldnt be a permanent fix, but I dont know if I have the money to do the rings and all that if it ends up being the problem.

Thanks for all the help and tips guys, I cant begin to express how much I appreciate it.

Stock rings are good to 150000 miles, anything over that and it's time for a rebore.
FE's should last a while longer

    >198,000 miles

well ass. looks like this might be worse than i expected

does this mean that they're almost certainly gone?

    Re: Pants' 88 GT-S HELP!

Did the compression test, wet and dry

    Dry | Wet
    ----------
    150 :1: 175
    175 :2: 190
    174 :3: 225
    160 :4: 190

I dont really know what they mean, and I'm way confused at the 225 on cylinder 3. Any insight would be helpful. I guess they're okay considering most are above 160?

    Re: Pants' 88 GT-S HELP!

That's not the worry, the problem here is that the wet & dry readings should be the same or similar

You have 2 OK cylinders for now, but all 4 rings are leaking

Actual psi depends on what gasket is fitted and whether it's been skimmed before

    Re: Pants' 88 GT-S HELP!

Oh okay, that makes sense that they're all supposed to be the same. So is it safe to say that those two could probably be leaking oil and causing the horrific smoke? And that i need to replace them?

Also, could it be the catalytic converter be overheating and causing all that smoke? The guy put one on but he didnt say if it was used or new or what. He also said that he put on a generic fuel pressure regulator, could that be putting too much fuel in and causing problems? Sorry for all the questions, i'm just stumped

-the hotter the cat is the better it works. may be full of oil and not getting hot enough to burn it off, or too saturated.

-youd have to take a pic of the FPR. as long as the pressures are correct, and its properly getting vacume i dont know why it would be an issue.

does your oil smell like gasoline?
    what oil are you using?
how often do you change it?

My oil just smells like oil, and it was changed along with the filter when I first got it.

I celebrated my birthday on the 10th, so you know what that means. Car parts!
Got a battery box and a full gasket kit that I found in this thread http://st162.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4997&hilit=gasket+set Its the same one that the local auto parts store would've sold me for way less. Came out to 50ish dollars with priority shipping, highly recommended.

I had planned on starting the head gasket replacement today, but somehow I got the flu! Hopefully I feel better by tomorrow, because I'm starting to miss driving this thing.

I started tearing the engine down today, I have nowhere to go so I took my time. Boy did i find some weird and unpleasant things.

Weirdly long tubes plugged with bolts
    [IMG]

GAPING HOLES IN MY TRANSMISSION. Isnt this where the starter is supposed to be on the GE? I dont think this is a GE transmission. Very confused.

And the best part? Completely destroyed motor mount. Fell into bits once I pulled it out.

Tomorrow I deal with the nonsense that is taking the intake manifold off. My least favorite thing about the job for sure. That and cleaning off all the grime on the engine bits.

Where does the plugged pipe come from?

Your box & starter are from an FE but they used a GE sarter cover

Re: Pants' 88 GT-S: Repairs in progress

So I can take a cover off another transmission and cover that up right? From an FE I assume?
Also, there is a very wide V shaped piece above the fuel rail where that tube comes from. I would take a picture but its dark now. I cant seem to find a picture on here that shows it, so I'll snap one tomorrow.
