I started up my '86 GTS which had been sitting for a while. Heard what I could only describe as a high pitch scratching/ squealing noise coming from the alternator area. It went away after the car warmed up a bit in less than 5 minutes, but I sprayed a little WD-40 on the alternator and belt (I know you shouldn't but I did anyways), not sure if that helped or not. Does the water pump make a high pitch scratching/sqealing noise if it's on the way out or does the alternator make that type of sound?
That kind of sounds like the water pump. The bearings could be on the way out, causing the shaft to not spin true, and scrape.
Sounds like water pump Use water on the belt next time, better is to remove the alt belt and start it. If the noise comes back it's under the timing cover
Like everyone says, it could be the water pump. Mine was similar to yours but probably worse and even louder Sounded like the bearings we're gonna go at any time. I didn't start my car either after a while and the car seemed like it was gonna blow a bearing at me, I drove down the street a 1000 feet and the car stalled at a stop sign. Found out the water pump gear seized and broke into 2 pieces and the antifreeze started leaking That was 8 months ago. Had to push the car down my block back to my house. Luckily someone saw that I needed help and assisted. It's a real workout I tell ya. Totally didn't expect it was the waterpump though, thought it was the cams or alternator even though the engine was running smooth.
You're lucky you didn't lose the motor, guys with FE motors are luckier Never drive with a noise you don't know - the water pump is on the cambelt and has killed many, many 3S motors. Also the cam tensioners can squeak like that, if one seizes (seen it happen) the belt will snap or come off ps. "Belt dressing" is the correct stuff to spray on slipping belts, I use water to confirm the problem
Had no idea why I drove it despite the chaos waiting to erupt in the engine bay. Alot can go wrong. My motor is an FE motor, great Toyota motor.
Thanks for the advice guys, belt's OK, it seems to be coming from the alternator. Gonna read up and see if I can take that apart..... :ugh
Can't see why not, problem is getting the nut undone without harming the pulley You got to hold the shaft and use a real deep spanner or weld up a tube socket
