Re: Red 1986 GT-S Seals & Seafoam Good man, your Celica will love you for the TLC. Those cross beams weigh a bit dont they, but I know of plenty of people who had rusted or sheared bolts, so if they came out all good, then thats a result!
Re: Red 1986 GT-S Seals & Seafoam Hey, I may have to do this it the near future. Question: If your remove both the front-to-rear cross member and the side-to-side cross members, does the engine stay in place? Did you have to support it? Thanks
Re: Red 1986 GT-S Seals & Seafoam BTW, I figured out the radiator you have is made by CSF. Can you tell me if yours is 1-row or 2-row?
Re: Red 1986 GT-S Seals & Seafoam I did support the motor after unbolting the crossmembers (you have to unbolt both), but you don't really have to. I did it more to be on the safe side and to prevent undue wear on the other 2 motor mounts. It is important to note that when you go to reattach the crossmembers, you will need to lift the motor up slightly to get it to line back up with the motor mounts. The radiator is just a single row unit, but it does the job well. It was obvious when I got under the car that it was a replacement, it has hook ups for the A/T transmission cooler. Good to know what company made it.
Re: Red 1986 GT-S Seals & Seafoam Fuck me it's been a long time since I updated this... BLESS ME, FOR I HAVE SINNED I'm going to stipulate that I am probably the most neglectful 4g owner here, and am not at all proud of that declaration. Still haven't replaced the busted fender, beat the drivers side headlight assembly straight with a framing hammer, and still haven't got around to blocking the hole left by the EGR tube in the manifold. The windshield is also still good and fucked, repair money went to rent instead. Shit, it's been over a year since I did a proper oil change. The brake rotors are more warped than Charles Manson, and I'm pretty certain that rear brakes gave up the fight for life entirely. Essentially, I am a terrible person. In my pathetic defense I offer up the fact that I have been surviving on Ramen noodles and crackers for the last few months, usually only one meal a day. Great way to lose weight. But somehow I managed to get a few (free) dyno runs in. Yep, no shit. Here's what she pulled. Keep in mind that a)TVIS has been dead for a while b)it was 95 degrees F in the shade when I made this run, and c)my motor mounts are toast... Hp: 96@4800rpm Torque: 125lb-ft@4300rpm I wish I had a way to actually post up the printout from it, but it clearly shows that past 5000rpm or so, the car is essentially just making noise, the power just falls like a stone. Gotta fix the TVIS... Because I am truly a heartless bastard, I also forced the car to do a 1/4mile run on the dyno. Ran a 17.3, which is nearly a second slower than spec I believe. Awesome.
Re: Red 1986 GT-S Seals & Seafoam Welcome back bud, it's been awhile Oh I hear 'ya. Been there - it just wasn't for months though, more like YEARS I can never eat ramen ever again! Hang in there, rewards will come sooner than you think
Re: Red 1986 GT-S I am unworthy seems like everyone is coming out of the woodwork lately. we still have all the parts monkey! hang in there bud.
Re: Red 1986 GT-S I am unworthy Thanks for the support guys Good to hear that the parts are still available, I was worried they might not be by the time I get play money.
Re: Red 1986 GT-S I am unworthy Forgot to mention: A few months back when I had a job, I managed to nip down to the local pull-a-part and snag a gorgeous, black dashboard (with all the wires it has in it), center console, and gauge cluster out of an 89 GTS coupe. Cracked open the Odometer and fiddled with it so it matches the mileage on my 86, but I've been looking at the wiring diagrams and it looks as though Toyota changed up the gauge cluster harness between 86 and 89. Is this the case? And if so is there a way to make the 86 wiring play nicely with the 89 cluster? I'd hate to lose these mint gauges because of some wiring shit.
Re: Red 1986 GT-S I am unworthy As far as I'm aware the gauge wiring is the same for FE & GE motors 86-89 The AT160 and electronic dash have different wiring and maybe the 2S versions as well What motor was in it?
Re: Red 1986 GT-S Woo, finally getting some cash to work on the Celica! Finally replaced the windshield today, next week I'll be buying a full set of GR-2 struts, brembo OEM rotors, new brake pads, and new front calipers (going to rebuild the rears, much cheaper), buying a set of new tires, and new motor mounts! Hooray! Only regret is not having enough left over in the budget to get the body parts from Mafix so the looks will match the rest of the car. But damn, I'm still psyched to finally be able to bring back some glory to the Celica, and get to wrench on it again.
Re: Red 1986 GT-S Hell yeah money kicks ass! enjoy the moment buddy, its been months since ive even seen my car. gave me lots of time to think. and ive came up with a handful of "bad" ideas lol
Re: Red 1986 GT-S Hell yeah money kicks ass! well the fenders are gone monkey. we are working on an alltrac ATM.
Re: Red 1986 GT-S Hell yeah money kicks ass! Mafix: The fenders I can get at a local yard, so don't worry about that. I'm mostly interested in the Alltrac kit, or is that going to be used as well? Celicasteve: When I first posted this, there was a couple interior photos, guess they got trimmed from the thread. You wouldn't want to see the interior at the moment, it's missing most of the lower dash and needs a thorough cleaning. Once I get it all back together I'll post new pics. (oh, right, the black dashboard hasn't been installed yet, gonna do that during the same thrash to install all the new parts I'm ordering tomorrow)
Re: Red 1986 GT-S Hell yeah money kicks ass! Did you you get the 89 gauge cluster to work on your 86?
Re: Red 1986 GT-S Hell yeah money kicks ass! Not yet, I'm installing all the new dash/suspension parts at the same time. Soon though! Also gonna go ahead and buy some Eibach Pro drop springs. A little treat for myself and the Celica
Re: Red 1986 GT-S Hell yeah money kicks ass! So, got pretty much all the parts in, here's a run-down of what all I purchased 4 KYB GR-2 struts Eibach Pro-kit 1" drop springs Sumitomo HTR 4s (not the best tire, but I've heard good things) full set of Brembo OEM rotors EBC Greenstuff brake pads caliper rebuild kits F/R 4 steel braided brake lines (needed new ones, might as well get the good stuff) new front strut mounts strut boots/bump stops thermostat so I can finally have a working heater again New front/rear motor mounts to restore shifting quality Also going to paint the Alltrac wheels white with the "Celica" on the center caps in red. Tried the local yard to get new fender and headlight assembly, no luck, going to try again next weekend. So far total cost involved is about $1200-1300 including shipping charges.
