Its Raining...In My Car!!!

I did a quick search of this and did not see anything that I could find relating directly to this, so here is the situation:
So I just got my 165 back on the road this week after about 3 years of sitting(mostly in the elements). I drove it over to my dads house last night, chatted with him for about two hours, and when I got back in to drive home there was water all over the center console near the shifter. After a quick inspection, it seems like the water is coming out from a 6 inch or so area along the top of the windshield near where it connects to the roof( right near the rear view mirror). Has anyone encountered this problem? Do I need to take the car to a windshield shop, or will some silicone do the trick?

Sounds like the windshield needs resealing. I get a drip once in a while from around the same area. It freaked me out at first. I haven't done anything about mine yet as it's only once in a while that happens, but you know it's rusting under there....

You could probably remove the trim and do it yourself.

I know they used rubber butyl tape to seal the side quarter windows, probably the same stuff for the front windshield.

hmm maybe I will just try to tape it up for now... I dont want to have to spend like 400 bucks getting this fixed right now, maybe i can postpone it for a couple months.

^With the rainy/winter season coming up, ugh.
You could peel the trim up and see what's going on in there....just make sure you can put it back, LOL

They used d/sided tape on the windscreen and a non-setting sealer on the rear windows

    The news isn't good I'm afraid, d/sided tape & glass doesn't rust.
That area is a low point at the top of the screen and pools water there

Take out the roof lining & screen, make sure you get rid of the rust and weld up the holes.
Rustproof the roof interior with fish oil spray as well
Silicone will only make it worse as it will keep rusting under the silicone
Be careful how much silicone you use on assembly as too much will cause more pooling and
    problems later on

Note how the rust has worked it's way under the tape as well!

Rear windows have this non-setting sealant, can sometimes be repaired by using a spatula
between the glass to re-orientate the sealant

That non-setting stuff is called rubber butyl tape. I got some from a glass shop, but auto shops also carry it. It's great stuff, very sticky, seals well and (in some cases) easier to apply than silicone.

Great pics. Really illustrates how that rubber butyl tape doesn't dry out, even after 20+ years

Thanks Rick, however I disagree on the butyl

On several cars I've seen it's moving down onto the windows, telltale is the
window chafes at the top and the black inner coating gets removed

At least silicone sets and doesn't go "walkies"?

^Actually, what you described is correct, they can get the "walkies" now and then, LOL.

the problem you have with it going walkies is from heat right??

Combination of Gravity, heat, vibration and womens feet I think

Sprey, sounds like they forgot to blow it out after, so much for rustproofing their work!!
