Adjusting timing with motor in car.

    How to do it.?


    I think the timing may be off 2 or 3 teeth.
    4 feet flames coming thru headers
    Ignition firing while exhaust valves are opened.

    Well the dizzy only goes in two ways, right and 180 degrees wrong. Unless you had the head off? timing belt changed? If neither then first try loosening the bolt and rotating the dizzy as far as it will go left and right, if that doesn't fix it then take your dizzy out and spin the gear around 180...put it back in and try rotating it. Do you have a timing light?

    NO i replaced the timing belt with the head on.... Cut old belt off and installed new one and i think just maybe the cam moved.

    I have a timing light and on timing marks are visable when number 1 fires.
    like i said flames are flying out the header.

    OUch. I would say you are 180 degrees out if you can see the timing marks. I would suggest completely resetting your timing

    Take the dizzy out and spin the motor by hand (or quick bursts with the key) until your timing mark is at 5 degrees btdc on the compression stroke

    To find out what stroke you are on you must take out the number 1 plug and stick your thumb over the hole, when you spin the crank and the timing marks come into focus your thumb will either get sucked in or get pushed out, when air pushes your thumb out you are on the proper stroke.

    Once you are lined up (5 degrees btdc and compression stroke) the camshaft gear should also have a mark on it somewhere (if you have the covers off)
    then take the cap off the distributor and line up the rotor so it is just about to contact the number one plug wire (the gear is grooved so it will sit in the right place), then stick it back in and leave the adjusting bolt loose. The car should fire now and should actually be very close if not dead on...it may need some minor adjustment.



    Or........if you are sure you didn't move anything while the old belt was off you can maybe get away with just taking the dizzy out and spinning it 180 and stuffing it back in.

    Well i am sure there is no wasy its 180 degrees off. NO way possible.
    by dizzy you mean distribitor??

    yah sorry its less typing...I'm lazy.

    I don't know man, but you can still completely reset the timing by using my method, once you have the crank at 5 degrees btdc on the compression stroke, there will be a notch on each camshaft that should line up as well as the distributor will fit right in (with the rotor pointing to the correct wire)

    Or if you think the cam timing is out, remove the timing belt cover and check? It's a bitch to get to some of the screws at the back of the cover but it's do-able!

    Then loosen the belt and adjust it accordingly?

    **edit: ie make sure the marks on the cam gears are lined up properly...
    Once my timing cover seal got caught in my cam gears and it skipped teeth. Then it happened 2 weeks later :(


    Or have I missed the point completely haha?

    180 deg out is possible

    Cams turn at 1/2 crank speed so only line up every 2nd crank turn

    Set cams and rotate motor 180deg - check dizzy rotor position - repeat

    Remember motor is inclined so cam marks are further back from vertical, stick a thin rod/wire
    through the cambelt pulley hole to make sure
