Yeah so the right rear caliper is getting unbelievably worse and I couldn't get the scrapyard calipers and don't want to pay $600+ for new ones from Toyota so I called a guy I know that owns a little shop that use to get parts for my Mom's car so he said he's going to try and find me some new calipers. I'm gonna replace all four at the same time and also get new rotors and pads all around too; just gotta find some decent quality and priced ones. Anyone have any places to get 4 rotors and pads that are priced good and are of good quality?

    Thanks in advance.

The caliper prices are a lot cheaper in the USA; we get hosed up here as they're about CDN$85+ each. Lordco should have them in stock.

The caliper rebuild kits are great if you have the time and the piston/cylinder bore is not scored or heavily rusted. The caliper rebuild kits I got a few years ago only cost $7 and that takes care of 2 calipers. You'll also want the boot kit so add $6 = $13 per axle. I had a little surface rust but no scoring on my cylinder parts. Some emery cloth took care of that and a few hours later I had rebuilt all four corners.

I bought mine from DV Aldous (Vancouver) but hope this name and p/n's help you out.....

Top: CARLSON PN# 15214: ST165 Front Caliper Rebuild kit C$7.00
Bottom: CARLSON PN# 16048: ST165 Front Caliper Boot kit, C$6.00

As you can see, the kit is mostly rubber gaskets, boots and fittings like the retaining clips (see pic below). There's really not much to it but you're re-using most of your metal parts; it's the rubber parts that deteriorate and rip.

PS - you'll need some brake lubricant.
I use Kleen Flo's EZE Slide silicone brake lubricant. Good stuff

Check the state of the metal if you can before you order an overhaul kit, I didn'y and my drivers side front caliper was scored and pitted to hell. Had no choice in the end but to go for a pair of new front calipers, and as I had opened the stuff, could I get a refund!

It must be a common issue with our caliper design, as seized calipers are very popular in the uk.

Hey, just FYI you can rebuild your calipers in about 10 minutes with no replacemnt parts needed. I didnt read too much into you problem but

    For rear:

Take caliper off, get a long punch like object, screw driver rod, ect. and with a mallet knock the piston out, inserting your punch like object through the brake line hole.

Get some brake cleaner and razor blades and clear the pistol, use the razors to get the surface flat. Clean your slider the same way. Clear the bore a bit with brake cleaner but avoid getting it on the seal as much as you can or it swells.

lube everything up with the brake lube and reassemble, Ive done 6 calipers this way, once a couple weeks back in a parking lot.

Same thing with the front, get creative for removing them, take them off the hangers and pump the off with the pedal if you have to.

For anyone who cringes at the thought of this repair method... you can pay your $600 on a $1000 car :)

    Little Update:

Well I finally managed to get the rear caliper off with much help from Jon; thanks again. Though what a pain in the butt to get it off. The top slider was the problem which wouldn't let me get the caliper off. When I managed to get it off there was some white stuff covering the threads and shaft so I'm not sure what it is. So funny now because the car is sitting on 4 jack stands with no tires and no rear caliper so it pisses off my landlord that lives above me. He thinks working on the car in the driveway looks "tacky"...lol I wonder how tacky he thinks it looks now..hahaha

Here are some pictures of how it sits....well...stands now.

mmmm....New camera....Pictures are a little better eh? Not in full resolution though...3648x2736 is the full resolution...way too big :p

Hurray for major power steering leak...parts are ordered.

See if you can spot the problem in this picture...

This is how bad the rear, inside brake pad got due to the seized caliper. Caught it just in time.

Here's the top pin that refused to come off...anyone know what this white stuff is?

Oh and yeah just in case anyone is wondering; I sold the 4Runner. Gonna be moving to Vancouver in like 2 months if everything works out. So it basically the 4Runner or the Celica and that's a damn obvious choice. I bought it for $1900 and sold it for $2000 did do ANYTHING to it. Didn't even change the oil or spark plugs...so thought it was a damn good deal. So basically now the 3S-GTE project is back in progress and will be ordering parts very soon. New valves, springs, pistons, rods, bearings and probably cams given mine are all rusted. Already have a complete gasket set from Toyota so that's a start. Got about $3100 to spend.

Just thought I'd let everyone know. Any comments, suggestions are very welcome!

    Cheers!

That white stuff is probably just powdery corrosion or old white grease. Looks like you've got your weekend planned ;) Good luck!

Man, - those aren't jacking points!
It's unsafe, you're bending those arms and stuffing the bushes at the same time

White stuff is rust, always oil bolts before putting them back in

Funny how a car changes status when you take the wheels off, I had a
scrap car standing outside for 2 years. Sold the rims 2 weeks ago and now
it's been reported as a "wreck"?

    LOL

    Re: Tanner's '86 GT-S [Update - Aug.21.09] - 56k Beware!

I find that the recommended lift points (those thin edges) crush under the weight of the car. Use the jackstands with a notched "U" or "Y" shaped top support. My jackstands don't fit that well so I improvised with some slotted wood blocks.

Hmm, well i did the "rock the car" test while having it on all 4 stands and it didn't budge. Also that trolly jack that is under the rear end is holding up a bit of the weight too. I've used those pinch weld lift points on the outside of the car with horrible results...I was talking the wheels off my sister's CRX to repaint them black after I did mine and I jacked it up using those pinch welds and they bent in resulted in the jack slipping out and the car dropping to the ground; lucky I didn't have the wheel off yet. After that I am very reluctant to using those points even though that's what the owner's manual etc. recommends.

Yeah, I don't like them for the same reason. Just posted it for your reference. As long as it's sturdy wherever you support it. Be safe amigo :)

    Re: Tanner's '86 GT-S [Update - Aug.21.09] - 56k Beware!

If you use the correct jack that doesn't happen, tyre shops and garage hoists
use big universal rubbers and you almost never see it happen unless the car is rusted

The channels are easily straigtened, your arms aren't
That's $400 worth of bushes being squashed as well
At least put them on the body near your crossmembers etc

pfft fuck it, if its sturdy, and not bending it go for it. the sides are fucking usless id take thick control arms over pissy steel lips anyday. i remember jacking up my bros old rolla when i was 15 on the recomended jacking points and POP went the floor lol

    Re: Tanner's '86 GT-S [Update - Sept.5.09] - 56k Beware!

    Little update:

Got a bunch of new parts in for my Celica. Was only going to get new calipers for the back and rotors/pads but then thought mid as well change all the brakes. Didn't plan on getting any other than just brake components; but yeah, I am bad at saving money. Once I get money it's all gone; at least it was something worth spending the money on.

    1. CV Joints - both sides
    2. Rotors - Front and back
    3. Brake Pads - Front and Back
    4. Calipers - Front and Back
    5. Wheels Bearings - Front
    6. Power Steering Hose
    7. OEM oil filter + Mobil 1 Oil

As of this second I am painting the calipers. I have already painted the rotors a couple hours ago so I will have pictures of both when the calipers are done.

Cheers for now, will have more pictures hopefully tomorrow. Got some things I am doing to the engine bay so I'll post pictures of that too when it's done.

EDIT: Well, dammit, went to put another coat of paint on the calipers at it is starting to rain out so it'll have to wait unfortunately...
