Sand back all the rust to bare metal - Use some rust remover - Bog if needed - Primer - And paint.

surface rust, sand it down, get it all and dont worry about your paint, metal is more important. paint it after and consider yourself lucky yours isnt like mine :p

Guys re the rust on the windscreens, a few 4th gens over here have been scrapped as the A pillar rust has caused leaks and un told rust damage on the floor pan / bulkhead/ sills area. The windscreen trim causes a lot of this damage, when the screens are installed/ taken out over the course of a cars lifetime the trim scratches the paint, and then the trim is great at collecting water and leading to rust.

If you have rust damage in the A pillars or roof , be sure to do the best job possible to remove it, I even run with out the screen trim in, as I have seen so many 165s rot on the screen posts.

bah, just one more thing to worry about, I had rust bubbles forming on the a pillar and roof. I scraped off th epaint and took it down to metal then applyed a lot of rust paint overtop. 6 months and no signs of antmore rust... If I could Id take the window and and correctly fix everything, but Ive already got a lot on my plate with rust as it is. (see my cars post in the ride section!) My rar bumper is unexistant, and a decent amout of damage behind it. Current strategy is more or less, remove rust with a wire wheel+ drill or grinder, welding in new metal is nesisary, then coat everything exposed with rust specific paint, Id like to think its been working well, but with all the repair work ive still got a lot ahead od me. In the UK they are pretty strick about rust, but hopefully you dont haev salt all over your roads that causes it.

p.s can you give a bit more info on pulling off the trim around the windscreen? Id live to do it if I could removre more rust / weight :p . maybe a close up pic?

Will take some pictures so you can see what I mean,

One day I will make up a rubber insert for it too!

Sadly we have salt covered roads too :( I was a a 165 a couple of weeks ago and the sills and floor pan had just vanished

It was stripped and scrapped, as it was far to gone to save.

Rust sucks, I have this annoying rust near the top of my rear wheel. Its so bad it's chipping the metal off.. Damn you street salt! I wonder if its easy to replace the quarter panel, because some rusts are too late to get rid of. It's like frost bite.

I just ripped mine out, and stuck them back down wi9th silicone trim adhesive, strong as all fuck. Tho my windscreen has been changed, and they giot sealer everywhere, so my trims dont clip in lol.

 mephtar, your car's pretty stunning dressed in white

but back on topic... the cheapest way of fixing rust would be to use some kind of rust dissolver
    and applying "rust stopping" paint?

on a tight budget, where most of the cash will be spent on increasing handling =]

get a steel wire wheel, that goes in a drill, get as much as you can off with it, then you can try the rust disolver and paint but I don't have much luck with that acid stuff working very well. The best would be a flap wheel on a grinder, were the metal sparkling rust free, get a zinc primer specific for rust then paint overtop.

    p.s. Thanks
