Weird noise

Discussion in 'Diagnosis/Help' started by celicagtsgurl, Jan 21, 2009.

  1. Ok I haven't had any problems out of my celica since the starter, soo I'm back. Ok heres the deal on my way to work I stopped to get something to eat, when i was pulling bak out into traffic and I heard a tapping/rattle noise comin from the front of the car so I stopped for a sec, and the noise stopped. I was less than a mile from work so I drove really slow til I got in the parking lot. I never heard the noise til I got around 3000 rpms and it got louder as the rpms got higher. After I got to work I cut the car off and left it alone for like 2-3 mins and I started the car again and drove it around the parking lot and it was fine then, no noise at all. Now when I left work on my way home I stopped at a gas station to fill up and the car did fine all the way there, but when I pulled out onto the highway and it got to 3000 rpms it started again, so I shifted under 3000 rpms so that I could make it home. When I got home I got my boyfriend to drive it around so he could hear the noise, but the damn car didnt make it again and we drove around for as long as it took me to get to work. So what do you guys think? Could it have spark knock? Today is the first time its ever did this, I would like to know what it is, but I'm off tomorrow so I am going to drive it around town some to see if it does it again and try to get a vid of it makin the noise.

theres not much anyone can do without actually driving the car, if it happens at 3000 and ^ i would put my money on your knock sensor, because the faster you drive the more your engine will advance the timing to keep up with the speed of the engine. a knock sensor doesnt let the timing get to advanced to let detonation, or "spark knock" happen. because it can feel when the knocking starts to happen, and retards the timing slightly untill the knock goes away. quick test, let your car idle up, find your knock sensor on the block,(on the back if memory serves me right) and tap the block beside the sensor with a metal hammer, if you idle changes, it works, if it does not, that can be the cause of your problem, then you can further diagnose the sensor and wires.

    I thought the 3sge was knock sensor-less?

I could very likely be wrong, but I thought the '87.5-89 year 3SGEs had them, but not the '86-87.5 batch. No ideas directly regarding the noise though.
