Im getting my first car in like a week (86 Celica GT-S) and Ive driven it before and when you shift from 1st to 2nd it kinda grinds so you have to basicly go 1st > Neutral > 2nd. Are the gears not lining up properly? How can this be fixed and whats an estimate on the cost?

    Thanks a lot.

    p.s This site rocks :)

I'm pretty sure its a bad synchro . You have to get the transmisson out of the car and open it.. I don't know about the price but it'll cost more in time than the price of the synchro.

2nd gear grinding is suppose to be pretty common (or so ive heard) in these cars. There is a product on the market that you can add to your trans that is suppose to help or totally stop the grinding (depending on how bad it is). ive heard jay leno talk about it a few times on his website but i can never remember the name of it (anyone wanna help me out with the name?). i would suggest trying that first since taking apart the transmission can start to get expencive.

Try changing the transmission fluid to a higher quality and more importantly new; lubricant. I use amsoil, or lucasoil synthetic products.

Can you tell me roughly where the drain plug is and how to re-fill the lubricant...I just started taking mechanic classes in school so im a bit new when it comes to the maintenance of cars :)

    Thanks.

Just swap in another known good transmission. Mines on 200,000kms in a few weeks, and still fine. Touch wood. So some last...

"This product will satisfactorily lubricate General Motors or Chrysler manual transaxles and transmissions from -40°C to +150°C."

Will it work good for my celica though?

It's what I've been told, doing this in the spring myself.

that was the product i was talking about (couldnt remember the name) i know ppl use it in cars other then GM and Chrysler. Theres no reason it wouldnt work in our cars, its all the same principle. Even if it doesn't work it wont hurt the trans any.
