I've owned my 162 for 8 years now, it's my first car, passed down from my parents. It started with no leaks, then some leaks, then lots of leaks, lots of fixing those leaks. Gearbox got a bit grindy, One head gasket, then a second after it overheated...

Some would say it's time for a new car, the smart thing to do even.

Not me. Whether it was out of love, or principal, or sheer stubbornness I just refused to let my car be something I "gave up on", just put in the too hard basket like sp many other people may do.

The final straw was after I had just redone my head gasket, put new rings on the pistons, new crank bearings all round, then I found a little mark on the crank where #4 conrod bolts on.

Cracked crank shaft.... Right, that's it.

Commence full engine strip down, #1 cylinder is in a sad state, all pitted, the block is just worn out.
So I bought a second hand engine and box, (with extractors on it! Woo!)

Now I've got the whole lot stripped down. I am going to town on this sucker!
Had the block honed, found a fully reconditioned head on ebay and bought that. It's mint.

    Where I'm at now

Blocks cleaned up, all internals are back in the block, new welsh plugs (don't overlook those) and as I write this I'm taking a break from fitting my new oil pump.

Once that's done, I need to order a clutch. Then it all goes back in. Fully rebuilt.
And then I'm doing my cams.

I was going to wait to finish before I posted, but I'm posting this now so I remember to take and post photos, and something to keep me working.

Expect updates, there'll be another 162 on the road soon.

Well it's been a while! Ugh life am I right?

Here's a couple of quick ones while I'm working on it today, just put the sump back on. Also notice the shiny new welsh plugs

I've been a slow bugger getting the engine back together, and its been hard when I've only had spare hours here and there and I live 30 mins from where it is!

Rego is due end of the month though so it's amazing how you suddenly find time when you are forced to!

    More progress soon

    Ah, Aussie shorthand for "registration".

Update: car is driving, yes I'm a horrible updater. Life has been absolutely.... Words don't explain, you know what they say when it rains......

I WILL post pics and do a proper update this weekend. So count this as a placeholder to remind me to do it so it doesn't get put off.

Fully rebuilt engine plus headers.... The difference is phenomenal.

    Will report this weekend.

    Will remind you ;)

Life is full of challenges and obstacles for us to overcome and make us into the person we are today. The Celica is a incredible form of escapism.

How is this one coming along? I saw in the "Where are you" thread you mentioned windscreen sealer on your hands today, new glass for the Celica?

    Hey!
Yeah it's coming along. Life threw me a bit of a curve last year, and a lot of things took the back seat.
    The car however, wasn't one.

I've been meaning to update for ages but just haven't.

Well it's all running, fully rebuilt engine + extractors. Yesterday was removing and regluing my rear quarter window, as the goop was coming off! I think windscreen adhesive is the worst stuff, just stays goopy forever and runs, non sagging my butt!
ill probably use silicone next time.

Hoping to respray in a month or so, once I fix the rampant rust.....

I'll do a better update later in the week too

If you use a silicone, make sure its polyurethane based. The cheap stuff is acid based and will make the car rust.

I notice you have the 'prefacelift' 10 spoke alloys...i hope if you stay 'factory' with the car you can use them again.Nicer than the later wheels.(Sorry Steve)

So I learned that windscreen sealant is for windscreens with rubber gaskets only, *not* for gluing in a window... Which is what the crummy panel shop did. So I have to redo it with poly now....

Yeah I dont mind these rims. My car is August '86 model. I seem to have a dealer optioned spoiler I've not seen anywhere else either.

Saying that I am hunting new wheels. 14s are apparently very uncommon these days, and I'd like my wheel arches filled a little more.

Thinking 16s with 50 profile, just to make it a little sportier without being huge.
Satin black, maybe like a 5 spoke. No gloss or chrome for me!

image.jpg Yup the 16's will look sweet.
It's gettin real hard to find 205-60-14's anymore haha

I like 16s as well, and they still look good with stock ride height. Go bigger and you've got to get the stance just right or it looks like a roller skate :p

    Whoops, thought I uploaded it!
    Here's the sucker.

Today I'm replacing my rear engine mount too, I urethaned them back 6 months ago, but it hasn't worked well.

Also, solid mounts are HORRENDOUS on this car, all it did was shake loose half my engine bolts after two weeks. Would not recommend filling mounts with urethane, sikaflex or similar.
