The Lancia Delta Integrale Evoluzione (say that shit 5 times fast). Basically my favorite rally car ever, next to the All-Trac. I envy you man.

I am at a complete loss as to what the other one is (the sleek one). Looks kinda like a Stratos, but more boxy. I like.

The other car is the lancia 037 rallye
A group B rally car, RWD, it took the fight to the audis before the S4 delta group B car.

It was amazing on tarmac, but not so great on loose stuff compared to the 4wd audis

The engine is very unusual as it features both super charging and turbo charging. 2.2 capacity, it was the basis for the engine in the later S4.

These cars were very strong and hugly fast, think sub 1000kgs and 450 - 550bhp.

The shape was very loosly based on the Lancia Monte carlo, a mid engined 2 litre car that was admired for its looks, but suffered issues with its brakes and build quality.

Its main group B 2wd rivals were the renault 5 Turbo, and the opel Manta 400, although that strictly speaking was not a full on group B car.

It followed the same idea as the statos, lightweight, mid engined, short wheel base, but 4wd on the audis made it uncompetitive. However the lessons learned from packaging and strength were intergrated into the s4 Delta, a car that was very very quick out the box straight away. Much like the pug 205 t16.

Thats all off the top off my head, there is shed loads more. one of my fave cars
Search youtube tour de course 85 and 86 and enjoy.

not strictly true mate.

The stratos competed against cars such as the Mk2 escort, the vauxhall chevette, the opel ascona, the porsche 911, alpine A110 coupes, and indeed the car that was supposed to beat it, the fiat 131.

It beat all off them at certain times, however, on blind rallies, such as the RAC rally of the 70s, it suffered as it was so hard to drive on the limit. on the practiced stages of the monte, the tour de course etc, it was unbeatable.

It actually was entered as a privateer car and beat the works fiats, much to their embarrassment.

When the Audi quattro came out, it was at first fast but fragile and Walter Rohrl actually won the wrc drivers championship in a opel ascona 400. But by then 1983, the writing was on the wall and it was left to lancia in the 037 to take the fight to the audis before the pug, the rs200 and metro 6r4 came along plus the S4.

in the days of the deltas intergrales, and the 165s they were unbeatable on gravel/ mud / snow etc, but cosworths and BMW M3s won on tarmac. E ven later on with WRC scoobies and evos off McRae and makkinen they were beat IIRC in 96 /97 by the 2wd super S2000 cars, which were lightweight 2wd, pugs and renaults with 300bhp. Only on tarmac of course, 4wd has pretty much ruled on the loose.
In the early days of group A, the 2wd cosworths, reckoned they lost 2 secs per mile in the british rally champ to the 165. they had at least 350bhp if not more, but the 165s trick for the time active diffs more than compensated.

Sorry I am a total rally car nerd. ( 100 plus vids and over 200 books and mags on it )

So uh, found some pictures of these two running at the Goodwood Festival of Speed that's going on this weekend. Here's the link to the thread I got these pics from, it's got a ton of cool pics, scroll down to get to them. I don't think you have to be a member to see the thread, let me know if there are any problems.

yes mate.

Its a tarmac wheel designed to duct in more air to cool the brakes on hot tarmac stages, to help with brake temps.

they used them occasionally on gravel too.

braking was a major issue for group B and A cars, the Audi quattro used to use water sprays to help maintain decent brake temps, the weight penalty being out weighed by the additional braking performance.

Geek mode off again

The big problem the group A Lancia Deltas, the Toyota celicas and the sierra 4x4 cosworth faced on tarmac was weight. Each team in the late 80s and early 90s had tarmac specialist drivers, who were off the pace on the loose stuff, but in the dry high grip surfaces such as Corsica, they flew. They also tended to have a more classical style on the tarmac, not relying so much on setting the car up as per Scandinavian flicks, more almost racing car lines. These drivers demanded more from there brakes, and the development of active diffs increased the grip further, hence extreme reasons to cool the brakes.

A good example of a tarmac specialist from recent years is Stephane Sarrazin, who has demonstrated clear speed in both rally cars and sportscars. plus of course kimi the finn F1 driver ( although he has chucked it at the scenery at number of times )
